SENIOR SEMINAR

THE PROCESS

bernbach 2020

ESSENTIAL QUESTION FORMATION

The process of developing my essential question was difficult at first because it had to be broad enough to research throughout the year, but specific enough to direct my thinking.

  • Considered various options

  • Revised

  • Identified what I didn't know

  • Wrote reflections

FOUNDATIONAL

LEARNING

I began the foundational learning process by sharing my "elevator pitch" at community feedback night.  The audience was filled with potential mentors who could guide me through my research.  Unfortunately, I was not able to secure an internship this night  but I continued reaching out to people that I found online and connections through my peers/faculty. During this time, I began my research and developed my annotated bibliography

EXPERIENTIAL

LEARNING

After a few bumps in the road and no internship, I decided the best way to spend my two weeks dedicated to experiential learning was by getting to know Ameen,, a man who had a troubled childhood and spent fifteen years in jail. â€‹

  • Revised flight plan

  • Decided on product

  • Began product outline

PRODUCT

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, my plan for my product was supposed to be a short film documenting the life of Ameen Lee and the events in his life that lead him down a path that eventually put him in prison.  Because of the pandemic, I had to do a lot of problem solving and decided the next best option would be a web page timeline

FINAL

STATEMENT

Although I came across many obstacles throughout the year long process, I'm thankful for them because they taught me the most.  The goal of my research was to gain a better understanding and a new perspective on the factors leading one to a criminal conviction and how one's past can play a role in the direction their life goes.  While I did learn a lot in that regard, my biggest take away from the whole process was the real world experience I got.  I sent my first professional email, took matters into my own hands when communication got difficult, and learned how to work in difficult circumstances.
